Sustaera

Sustaera brings a manufacturable, all-electric answer to DAC's cost problem, built on the credibility of a Breakthrough Energy Ventures lead. Its contactor is a honeycomb ceramic monolith coated with high-capacity alkali sorbent, with the resistive heating layer integrated directly into the structure — so renewable electricity, not combustion, drives the desorption cycle. The monolith form factor is the point: low pressure-drop means less fan energy, and a coated-ceramic honeycomb is a shape industry already mass-produces (it is the geometry of every catalytic converter), which hints at a genuine manufacturing-scale cost path rather than bespoke fabrication. Spun out of climate R&D firm Susteon in the Research Triangle, Sustaera reports demonstrating its integrated heated-monolith approach over 200-plus adsorption-desorption cycles in bench testing and says the design works across climates from grasslands to deserts — a flexibility that matters for siting near cheap power and storage. The backing is a strong signal in a field where technical due diligence is everything: a $10M Series A led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures and the Grantham Foundation's Neglected Climate Opportunities, earlier DOE R&D grants, and a $1M XPRIZE Carbon Removal milestone prize. If the monolith's manufacturability translates into real cost-per-tonne advantage, Sustaera is a climate-agnostic, mass-producible DAC platform with the most discerning climate investor behind it.

Sustaera is one of the earliest-stage and thinnest-capitalized names in an unforgiving field — roughly $11.5M raised, with the disclosed Series A dating to December 2021 and no larger round surfaced since, which for a hardware company four-plus years on is itself a yellow flag about scaling momentum. Everything load-bearing remains bench-scale: 200-plus cycles in lab testing is a proof point, not a plant, and integrated resistive heating raises exactly the durability and thermal-cycling questions — coating adhesion, sorbent degradation, electrode life — that decide whether a promising monolith survives thousands of real-world cycles at cost. DAC's history is littered with elegant lab chemistries that never crossed the pilot-to-commercial chasm, a crossing that costs tens to hundreds of millions Sustaera has not raised. The competitive set is daunting and far better funded: Climeworks, 1PointFive, Spiritus, Phlair, and RepAir are all deeper into permitting or deployment, so Sustaera risks being lapped before it fields a commercial unit. A Breakthrough Energy lead and an XPRIZE milestone are validating but small — seed-scale signals, not the growth capital a factory demands. And the end market is the same soft voluntary-removal market everyone is chasing. On this balance sheet, against this field, Sustaera's manufacturability thesis has to be proven quickly and cheaply, or it stays a lab result.
