Beyond Identity ended as an independent company through acquisition rather than collapse. After raising a $100 million Series C in February 2022 at a $1.1 billion valuation, the passwordless-authentication vendor was acquired by the email- and identity-security company Proofpoint, which took it on alongside the identity threat-detection and deception vendor Illusive as part of a double-acquisition move to strengthen protection of identities and credentials. The deal value was not disclosed. Proofpoint absorbed Beyond Identity's phishing-resistant, device-bound authentication into its identity-security portfolio, ending the standalone Beyond Identity brand. The acquisition closed in the January 2026 timeframe.
Onfido was acquired rather than failing on its own: in February 2024 Entrust agreed to buy the identity-verification startup, and the deal completed on April 9, 2024 at a reported price of up to roughly $650 million. At the time Onfido had over $140 million in annual revenue, more than 500 employees and around 1,200 customers, but it had not reached an IPO and its growth had slowed amid a crowded IDV market. Entrust folded Onfido's AI-powered document and biometric verification into its broader identity-centric security portfolio, and the standalone Onfido brand was subsumed into Entrust's product line. The acquisition ended Onfido's twelve-year run as an independent company.

Mega-rounds dominate the past year: Persona Series D ($200M), ID.me Series E ($340M), and World token sale ($135M) dwarf earlier seed activity. Median round size has shifted sharply upward since 2021, with growth and late-stage eclipsing $50M while seed/A rounds cluster under $45M.
Late-stage capital (Series C+, growth equity, strategic) now represents 80% of funding deployed in the past 18 months. Series D and E rounds proliferate; fewer early-stage bets are placed. Sector shows pronounced founder-friendly dynamics as earlier backers take exits through extension rounds and continuation funds.
Founders Fund, Ribbit Capital, and Lightspeed Venture Partners lead multiple consecutive rounds. Andreessen Horowitz remains prolific across asset classes (venture, token, growth). Newer entrants like Activant Capital and Spring Rock Ventures are filling growth/late-stage slots; SoftBank and Khosla remain selective but committed to winners.
Auth0 did not fail; it was acquired at the peak of its growth. In March 2021 Okta announced a definitive agreement to buy Auth0 in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $6.5 billion, and the deal closed on May 3, 2021. Auth0 initially continued as an independent business unit within Okta, led by co-founder and CEO Eugenio Pace, serving as Okta's developer-centric customer identity (CIAM) arm. Over time Okta integrated Auth0 into its Customer Identity Cloud, and the standalone Auth0 company ceased to exist as an independent vendor even as the Auth0 product name lived on inside Okta.
