Baichuan Intelligence is a Chinese foundation-model company founded in April 2023 by Wang Xiaochuan, the founder and former CEO of search engine Sogou. Headquartered in Beijing, it develops the Baichuan family of large language models, including open-weight releases, and has increasingly focused on medical and industry-specific AI. Its July 2024 round drew backing from Alibaba, Tencent and Xiaomi alongside Chinese state-backed funds, valuing the company at over 20 billion yuan (about $2.7B).
Baichuan was for a time among China's most valuable large-model startups, founded by a marquee search-era entrepreneur, and reached a valuation above $2.7B after its July 2024 round.
