Baichuan launched with a marquee founder and Alibaba-Tencent-Xiaomi backing, and was for a time among the most heavily backed of China's model startups — but backing is not a barrier, and its general models have been outrun by DeepSeek and Qwen. The medical pivot is the right instinct (verticals are where Chinese model companies can still own something) yet no regulatory or proprietary-data lock has been demonstrated, so the position remains rentable. Wang Xiaochuan is the founder and CEO of Baichuan Intelligence, which he started in April 2023.
