Contextual AI builds a turnkey enterprise platform for production-grade retrieval-augmented generation, which it brands RAG 2.0, letting companies build accurate, customizable AI applications grounded in their own data. Founded in 2023 by Douwe Kiela and Amanpreet Singh; Kiela helped pioneer RAG during his time at Facebook AI Research. The company is based in Mountain View with a presence in New York and London. In May 2026, Google DeepMind hired more than 20 of its researchers, including co-founder and CEO Douwe Kiela, and licensed its technology in a deal reported to be worth around $100M, while Contextual AI continued to operate.
