Contextual AI sells its RAG 2.0 platform to enterprises as subscription software: companies pay for access to a turnkey system for building production-grade retrieval-augmented generation applications over their own data, with the retriever and generator tuned end-to-end rather than assembled from disconnected components. The buyers are large organizations whose AI projects are stuck between demo and production; the sale is direct and technical, and the contracts are recurring platform agreements in the standard enterprise-AI mold, scaling with deployment scope. The anomaly in its financial history is the May 2026 Google DeepMind transaction — a technology license reported at around $100M that accompanied the departure of more than 20 researchers and co-founder CEO Douwe Kiela. That payment is a one-time infusion roughly equal to the company's entire $100M of lifetime venture funding, not a recurring line, and it leaves the continuing model unchanged on paper: platform subscriptions sold to enterprises. The post-deal question is commercial rather than structural — whether a thinner team can keep winning and renewing those subscriptions.
