Inflection AI
Inflection AI was founded in early 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman, Karen Simonyan, and Reid Hoffman, and built Pi, a consumer 'personal intelligence' conversational assistant, on its own large language models. In March 2024 Microsoft hired co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karen Simonyan, along with most of Inflection's roughly 70-person staff, to form its Microsoft AI division, and paid Inflection about $650M to license its technology. Under CEO Sean White, Inflection pivoted away from its consumer product toward an enterprise business that builds and tunes custom generative-AI models for businesses.
Inflection AI raised $1.3B in 2023 at a $4B valuation to build a consumer AI, then became the highest-profile example of big-tech 'acqui-hiring' when Microsoft took its founders and most of its team in March 2024, forcing a pivot to enterprise AI.
