Inflection AI's post-2024 business is bespoke model work for enterprises. Under CEO Sean White, the company builds, fine-tunes, and deploys custom generative-AI models for businesses that want to own and control their models and data — engagement-driven work in which the customer pays for the construction and tuning of a model estate, with Inflection's own foundation-model IP, the Inflection series that powered Pi, as raw material and accelerant. The economics blend services fees with technology licensing: each deal is high-touch and scoped, closer to consulting-plus-IP than to self-serve subscription software, sold direct to enterprises with ownership, control, and data sovereignty as the pitch. Two non-recurring events shaped the balance sheet more than any customer has: $1.525B of lifetime funding, and Microsoft's March 2024 payment of roughly $650M to license Inflection's technology when it hired the founders and most of the team — a one-time recapitalization that bought the pivot time. Pi survives as heritage and demonstration rather than a monetization engine, and growth now tracks enterprise deal flow, not consumer adoption.
