Safe Superintelligence (SSI) is an AI research lab founded in June 2024 by OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, along with Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy. The company has a single declared goal of building safe superintelligence, and has publicly committed to releasing no commercial products until that mission is complete. It operates a small team split between Palo Alto and Tel Aviv. Co-founder Daniel Gross departed in mid-2025 to join Meta, after which Sutskever became CEO and Daniel Levy became president.
SSI raised roughly $6B at a $32B valuation with no product and no revenue, one of the largest bets ever placed on a pure research lab and a marker of how much capital is chasing frontier AI talent.
