Founded in 2024 in Boston, Blue Water Autonomy is designing large, fully-autonomous unmanned ships for the US Navy, with a team drawn from shipbuilding programs that delivered 30+ naval vessels and from DARPA's NOMARS fully-autonomous-vessel effort. Its first platform, the Liberty Class, is a roughly 190-foot autonomous ship intended to operate on the open ocean for extended periods, integrating hardware, software and AI in a single tightly-focused design. The company raised a $50M Series A led by GV in August 2025, bringing total funding to about $64M. It unveiled the Liberty-class design in February 2026, based on a Damen Stan Patrol 6009 hull, and construction of the first vessel began in March 2026 at Conrad Shipyard, with delivery expected in late 2026 under a US Navy program of record.
Blue Water is one of the few startups attempting fully-autonomous large naval ships for blue-water missions rather than small attritable craft.
