Motional is a Robotaxi / AV company founded in 2020 and based in Boston, United States. It has been part of Hyundai Motor Group since 2024.
Motional was formed in March 2020 as a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, building on the nuTonomy and Ottomatika autonomous-driving teams Aptiv had acquired, and is headquartered in Boston with offices in Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Singapore. It develops a Level 4 driving system and the all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxi, co-developed with Hyundai, and supplies autonomous rides through ride-hail partners. After Aptiv stopped funding the venture in early 2024, Hyundai agreed in May 2024 to invest $475 million directly and pay $448 million for 11% of Motional's common equity from Aptiv, which gave Hyundai a majority stake. Motional then cut about 550 jobs, paused commercial rides and deliveries, and shifted toward a more neural-network-driven approach to autonomy. Laura Major, previously its CTO, became interim CEO in September 2024 and later president and CEO. Commercial service resumed on March 13, 2026, when Motional robotaxis joined the Uber app in Las Vegas with a vehicle operator on board.
Motional pairs an automaker parent's vehicle with its own driving system, and its IONIQ 5 robotaxi is certified under US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Its pilots with Uber and Lyft in Las Vegas and Uber Eats in Los Angeles delivered more than 130,000 autonomous rides before the 2024 pause. Since March 13, 2026, Uber riders in Las Vegas can be matched with its robotaxis at five pickup areas, including Resorts World and Downtown. Motional and Uber target fully driverless commercial service in Las Vegas by the end of 2026.
