Andrew Smith has spent his career at the intersection of trucking and clean technology. Early on he worked as a management consultant focused on international economic development, at GE Wind Energy, and managing an electric vehicle demonstration program at the Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources. While earning his MBA at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business (class of 2007) he founded ATDynamics, the trailer-aerodynamics company behind TrailerTails — rear-drag devices deployed on more than 40,000 trailers across 500+ fleets — which made the Inc. 500 list of fastest-growing private companies and was acquired by STEMCO/EnPro Industries in 2015. In 2017 Smith founded Outrider (originally Azevtec) in Colorado to automate the distribution yard — the choke point where trailers shuffle between over-the-road trucks and warehouse docks. The company came out of stealth in February 2020 with a $53 million Series A from NEA, 8VC, and Koch Disruptive Technologies, and has since raised well over $200 million to deploy its Level 4 autonomous electric yard trucks at large enterprise logistics yards. As CEO, Smith frames Outrider's system — autonomous tractors plus site infrastructure and management software — as redefining one of the most repetitive, dangerous jobs in the supply chain.

Outrider's integrated system automates the full range of distribution-yard tasks using autonomous, electric yard trucks paired with management software and site infrastructure. The system moves trailers between dock doors and parking spots, performs precise hitching, connects and disconnects brake-air lines, and tracks assets across the yard in real time. By replacing manual yard-tractor driving with driverless electric operations, Outrider aims to improve turn times and asset visibility, reduce safety incidents in a hazardous work area, and cut emissions for large logistics and retail operators.
