The 2025-2026 partnership cadence is the strongest in the sector: a Unity partnership (July 2025) putting Genies' avatar and UGC tooling in front of the world's largest developer base, AI avatar-creation tools for celebrities and talent agencies (November 2025), a landmark deal with the MLB Players Association and MLB Players Inc. (early 2026) to turn every MLB player into an AI avatar, and a Sanrio collaboration (March 2026) bringing globally beloved characters into interactive AI experiences. That is a repeatable playbook — take IP that owns cultural affection, make it conversational, game-ready, and user-customizable, and sit in the middle as the technology layer — aimed at rights-holders who all face the same problem: fans expect interactive characters and no studio, league, or agency can build the avatar stack internally. The decade of infrastructure Genies built through the hype cycles — auto-generation from photos, a fashion/asset marketplace, the developer SDK, the Parties "AI Roblox" platform — is exactly the full stack this moment requires, and the celebrity relationships that once looked like a gimmick (Rihanna, J.Lo, Cardi B avatars) turn out to have been a durable channel into talent and IP. With 241 employees and a fortress balance sheet, Genies can outlast every subscale avatar startup and consolidate the category as licensed AI characters go mainstream.

Genies is on its fourth act — celebrity emoji, NFT wearables and the metaverse, developer SDK, now AI-character IP experiences — and roughly $250M in, none of the prior acts produced a disclosed durable revenue base; the April 2022 $1B mark was set at the metaverse peak by Silver Lake and has not been re-tested by a priced round in over four years, a silence that in this vintage usually means the mark would not hold. The pivot cadence is the tell: a company that raised a quarter-billion dollars to be the avatar identity layer is now announcing bank partnerships (Absa), talent-agency tools, and character deals — business-development wins, not platform adoption, each requiring bespoke integration work that resembles an agency model more than compounding software. The competitive field for its current strategy is brutal: Character.AI owns conversational-character consumer behavior at hundreds-of-millions-of-users scale, Inworld owns the developer character runtime, Epic and Roblox own the venues where interactive avatars actually live (and both treat avatars as first-party features), and IP holders like Disney are building AI-character capability in-house or licensing directly from foundation-model providers. IP partnerships are also structurally fragile economics — MLB players and Sanrio keep the brand power and the negotiating leverage; the technology vendor is replaceable at contract renewal. Smart Avatars must therefore win as infrastructure while Genies simultaneously runs consumer experiments (Parties) that compete with potential customers.
