Meanwhile the technical moat has inverted — a 11–50-person company with no disclosed funding history is maintaining bespoke models against frontier labs whose free products now hold longer memory and better conversation than Replika's paid tier, and long-tenured subscribers are publicly churning over model quality. The founder who embodied the mission left to build something else, raising $20M for Wabi within months. A subscription business whose acquisition channel (app stores) and product surface (emotional intimacy) are both under regulatory siege, defending aging technology with a skeleton crew, is a franchise in managed decline unless it re-platforms fast.
