Boston Scientific

Co-founded Boston Scientific in 1979 with John Abele to make minimally invasive medical devices broadly available. He served as Chairman and CEO for decades, steering the company from a small catheter distributor to one of the largest medical-device makers in the world. Under his leadership Boston Scientific built its neuromodulation division through acquisitions including Advanced Bionics and Guidant's cardiac-rhythm unit. He passed away in 2023. His operational vision for scaling complex implantable therapy platforms is central to why Boston Scientific remains a dominant force in spinal cord stimulation and deep brain stimulation.

Pioneer of interventional medicine who co-founded Boston Scientific in 1979 alongside Peter Nicholas. Earlier in his career he was a co-founder of Medi-tech, one of the first companies to develop and commercialise flexible, steerable catheters. His philosophy — that less-invasive procedures improve patient outcomes and reduce system costs — shaped Boston Scientific's product strategy across cardiology, endoscopy, and neuromodulation. He has served on numerous boards and foundations advancing science education and health-care access, and holds emeritus status at the company he helped build.
