BeZero Carbon

The carbon-ratings business has a credibility problem that cuts at BeZero directly: watchdog analysis has found the top raters — BeZero, Sylvera, Calyx — frequently inconsistent and inaccurate, with the same project earning a high score from one agency and a low score from another, which undermines the entire premise that any of them measures ground truth. If ratings disagree, buyers learn to treat them as marketing rather than gospel, and the "Moody's" analogy collapses — credit-rating agencies command fees because their scale is regulated and their opinions are load-bearing in law; carbon raters have neither. The revenue base is also hostage to the size of the underlying market, and the voluntary carbon market has spent years contracting under greenwashing scrutiny, with total volumes and prices well below the hockey-stick projections that justified early funding into raters. BeZero competes head-to-head with the better-capitalized Sylvera plus Calyx and others in a segment that may not support multiple $100M-funded independents. Its push into CORSIA and compliance markets runs into entrenched registries and government methodologies that may not want a private rater in the loop. And the deepest risk is conflict-of-interest optics: a rater paid by a market that wants its assets to score well faces the same structural bias that discredited pre-2008 bond ratings. At $104M raised against a soft, skeptical market, BeZero is selling trust in a product the market is not sure it can trust.
