Captura commercializes a Caltech-born approach that turns the ocean into a planet-scale CO2 collector, sidestepping DAC's worst physical constraint: air is only 0.04% CO2, but the ocean holds roughly 150 times more carbon per unit volume, so pulling CO2 from seawater is thermodynamically far cheaper than pulling it from air. Its Direct Ocean Capture runs seawater through an electrodialysis stack powered by renewable electricity, extracts a concentrated CO2 stream, and returns decarbonized water to the sea, which then reabsorbs a matching quantity of atmospheric CO2 — using no chemicals and producing no harmful byproducts, a clean environmental profile that matters for the coastal permitting these systems require. The investor roster is the tell: a $12M Series A led by Equinor Ventures, expanded by $21.5M with Aramco Ventures, Maersk Growth, Eni Next, and EDP Ventures joining — energy and shipping majors who understand ocean operations, offtake demand, and scale-up capital better than any generalist VC. CEO Steve Oldham brings space-industry scale-up experience (formerly of MDA), and the modular, chemistry-light design is engineered for the mass-manufactured, drop-in-at-existing-outflows model that the highest-scaling CDR pathways will need. If ocean-based removal is genuinely cheaper per tonne than air capture, Captura is a flagship of the category with the strategic backing to reach gigaton-relevant scale.

Direct Ocean Capture is early-stage, unproven at commercial scale, and burdened with a monitoring problem that strikes at the heart of its product: the CO2 is not captured from the air directly but inferred to be reabsorbed by the ocean afterward, and verifying that atmospheric drawdown — the thing buyers are actually paying for — across a diffuse, dynamic ocean is scientifically contested and far harder than measuring gas pulled from a pipe. Marine CDR faces regulatory and permitting uncertainty that terrestrial capture avoids, plus ecological scrutiny over pumping and discharging seawater at scale, and public and NGO wariness of ocean geoengineering can stall projects regardless of the science. Captura's roughly $33.5M raised is thin for a company that must build and operate seawater infrastructure, and it is one entrant in an increasingly crowded ocean-CDR field alongside Ebb Carbon, Equatic, and others chasing the same coastal sites, offtake buyers, and unsettled measurement standards. The entire revenue model depends on selling verified removal credits into a voluntary carbon market that is soft, skeptical, and demanding ever-higher measurement rigor — exactly the rigor ocean drawdown is least able to supply today. Energy-major backing brings capital but also strategic agendas, and pilot success does not guarantee the leap to permitted, financed commercial plants. A scientifically elegant bet facing the field's hardest verification challenge.
