Climeworks

Climeworks is the most established name in direct air capture — an ETH Zurich spinout operating the Orca (2021) and Mammoth (2024) plants in Iceland, pairing amine-based solid sorbents with geothermal heat and permanent underground mineralization via Carbfix — and it has raised over $1 billion, more than any DAC peer, including a CHF 600M equity round in 2022 and a further $162M in 2025. That capital, brand, and 15-year operating head start matter in a field where credibility and permanence are the product: Climeworks has real plants, a proven geologic-storage partnership that mineralizes CO2 into rock, and a roster of premium corporate offtake buyers who value the durability and the pioneer's track record. As the market undergoes its flight to quality, the incumbent with fielded infrastructure and the deepest measurement history is best positioned to command premium pricing and win the largest corporate contracts. The technology is genuinely modular and improving across generations, and the co-CEOs (Gebald and Wurzbacher) have navigated the company from lab to the world's largest operating DAC facilities. If DAC is a necessary wedge for net-zero — and the IPCC pathways say gigatons of removal are required — then the best-funded, most-experienced, most-referenced pure-play is the natural consolidator and the safest bet in an otherwise unproven category.

Climeworks is the sector's cautionary tale, not its safe bet. Its Mammoth plant, rated at up to 36,000 tonnes a year, reportedly captured on the order of 100 tonnes across 2024 — roughly one-thousandth of nameplate — and both Orca and Mammoth have run well below design capacity, a devastating gap between marketed and delivered performance that calls the entire cost-and-scaling thesis into question. In May 2025 the company laid off around 20% of its ~500-person workforce, blaming economic uncertainty, weaker-than-targeted output, and shifting climate policy — including a US federal retreat from climate funding under the Trump administration that hit its US expansion plans. Mammoth was financed with Climeworks' own equity rather than project finance, an ominous signal that traditional lenders would not underwrite the plant economics. The core problem is thermodynamic and financial: pulling 0.04%-concentration CO2 from air is intrinsically energy- and capital-intensive, and Climeworks' delivered cost per tonne remains multiples above where voluntary buyers will purchase at volume. Having raised over $1B and still missing output targets while cutting staff, Climeworks demonstrates that money and experience have not solved DAC's fundamentals. If the pioneer with the most capital and the longest runway cannot hit its plants' rated capacity, the bear case is not company-specific — it is a verdict on whether solid-sorbent DAC can work at all at a price the market will pay.
