CTrees' roster entry carries no funding data at all — total raised and last round are recorded as none — which is the defining fact of its risk profile: as a nonprofit, it depends on grants, philanthropy, and program funding rather than a revenue model, leaving it exposed to the same climate-funding retrenchment squeezing the whole sector, with no equity war chest and no commercial engine to self-sustain. Its output is a public good, which is admirable but structurally hard to monetize; the organizations that most need forest-carbon truth (registries, project developers) have commercial incentives that don't always align with rigorous, independent measurement, and governments' willingness to fund an external monitor waxes and wanes with political climate priorities. Technically, satellite-and-AI estimation of forest carbon — especially belowground and in complex tropical canopies — carries real uncertainty, and CTrees competes with well-funded commercial MRV players (Sylvera, Pachama, Chloris, Planet's own analytics) plus academic and governmental Earth-observation programs for the same attention and the same data credibility. Being a nonprofit insulates it from profit-motive bias but also from the capital that scales technology and coverage. The mission is vital and the science is real, but as an entity CTrees is a grant-dependent research organization in a defunding environment — its importance to the market is not the same as its own durability, and thin institutional funding is a genuine existential variable.
