Ebb Carbon

Ocean alkalinity enhancement shares marine CDR's core, unsolved problem: measurement, reporting, and verification. The CO2 drawdown happens diffusely across ocean water after the alkaline stream is discharged, and rigorously quantifying how much atmospheric carbon was actually absorbed — the tonnes buyers pay for — is scientifically fraught and remains an active research frontier, which means Ebb's product is a credit whose delivered quantity is inferred, not directly measured. Regulatory and permitting risk is acute: discharging altered-chemistry seawater at scale triggers environmental review, ecological scrutiny over impacts on marine life, and public wariness of ocean geoengineering that can delay or block projects irrespective of the science. Ebb's roughly $33.8M raised is thin against the capital needed to deploy meaningful coastal capacity, and the Microsoft and Google deals — while marquee — are contingent future-delivery offtakes of "up to" volumes, not guaranteed revenue, and depend on Ebb delivering verified, permitted tonnes it has not yet proven at scale. The competitive field (Captura, Equatic, Vesta, Planetary) is chasing the same coastal sites, the same handful of buyers, and the same unsettled MRV standards, and a single measurement scandal or ecological incident anywhere in marine CDR could set back permitting for all of them. Strong anchor demand cannot substitute for the verification and permitting breakthroughs the whole category still awaits.
