Founded in 2021 by Matthew Eisaman, Ben Tarbell, and Todd Pelman, Ebb Carbon uses an electrochemical process to split seawater into acidic and alkaline streams, returning the alkaline stream to the ocean to increase its capacity to absorb and durably store atmospheric CO2 while counteracting acidification. The San Carlos, California company raised a $20 million Series A in 2023, then signed an offtake with Microsoft in October 2024 to remove up to 350,000 tonnes of CO2 over ten years, one of the largest marine CDR purchases to date, and later added an initial offtake with Google.
It anchors the marine CDR category with the largest ocean-alkalinity offtake signed to date, validated by Microsoft and Google.
