Graphyte
Graphyte is a Carbon Removal (CDR) company founded in 2023 and based in Pine Bluff, United States. It has raised $30M in total funding, most recently a Series A in 2024.
Founded in February 2023 with backing from Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Graphyte developed a process it calls Carbon Casting that compresses crop and wood residues into dense, dried carbon blocks, wraps them in an impermeable polymer barrier, and stores them in monitored underground facilities. By preventing the biomass from decomposing, the approach locks away the carbon for the long term at low cost. Graphyte's first commercial-scale facility is in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and the company signed its first offtake with American Airlines for 10,000 tonnes of removal. In July 2024 it raised a $30 million Series A.
Its low-tech 'carbon casting' approach targets gigatonne-scale, low-cost permanent removal, drawing marquee climate-fund backing.
