Graphyte

Graphyte's wager is that the cheapest durable carbon removal is the least clever one. Rather than engineer novel chemistry, its Carbon Casting process takes waste crop and wood residues — biomass that has already pulled CO2 from the air for free — dries them to arrest decomposition, compresses them into dense blocks, wraps them in an impermeable polymer barrier, and buries them under monitoring. No solvents, no high-temperature regeneration, no exotic catalysts; the durability comes from simply denying the carbon the moisture and oxygen it needs to rot. That low-tech posture is the whole thesis, and it drew Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures at founding in 2023 plus a $30M Series A in July 2024 (Prelude Ventures, Carbon Direct Capital). The first commercial-scale facility in Pine Bluff, Arkansas sits deliberately at the crossroads of major agricultural and timber regions — feedstock is abundant and effectively a waste-disposal problem for someone else — and opened in 2024 as one of the world's largest durable removal sites, with an initial capacity around 15,000 tonnes a year. The company already signed its first offtake with American Airlines for 10,000 tonnes, giving it demand-side validation from a marquee buyer. If Carbon Casting's per-tonne cost lands where Graphyte projects, it undercuts engineered DAC by an order of magnitude while offering the permanence that cheap nature-based offsets cannot, positioning it for the gigatonne-scale, low-cost removal the market keeps promising but rarely delivers.

Graphyte's simplicity is also its exposure: the entire durability claim rests on a polymer wrap and a monitored burial site keeping biomass dry and anaerobic for the century-plus timescales buyers are paying for, and any barrier breach, microbial activity, or moisture ingress reopens the decomposition the process is supposed to have stopped — a reversal risk that is harder to prove absent than an injected-and-mineralized CO2 molecule. That measurement-and-permanence question is precisely where enhanced-weathering and biomass-burial credits face the most scientific scrutiny, and the durability of buried biomass is less settled than geologic storage. The business is also capital-light in technology but capital-heavy in land, logistics, and feedstock aggregation: hauling, drying, and compressing millions of tonnes of low-density agricultural residue is a physical-logistics grind with thin margins, and biomass feedstock is contested by BECCS, biochar, and other bio-CDR pathways all bidding for the same residues. The $30M Series A is small relative to the gigatonne ambition, and the removal market itself is soft — 2025 retirements fell even as commitments rose, and buyers are consolidating toward the highest-integrity credits. A single American Airlines offtake is a start, not a book of business. Graphyte must prove both that Carbon Casting's carbon stays put under third-party MRV and that the logistics pencil out at scale before its low-cost story becomes a low-cost fact.
