Enhanced weathering's central problem is measurement, and InPlanet has not escaped it — quantifying exactly how much CO2 a field of spread basalt has durably removed requires modeling soil chemistry, weathering rates, and downstream bicarbonate transport that are genuinely hard to verify, and the scientific community is still debating how to credit the pathway without over- or under-counting. Tropical soils accelerate the reaction but also complicate the accounting, since warm wet conditions drive competing biological and hydrological processes. The company is tiny and thinly capitalized — a ~€5.8M total raise against a mission that requires mining, crushing, hauling, and spreading millions of tonnes of rock, a logistics-and-capital grind with unforgiving unit economics. The Microsoft offtake is a genuine coup but also a single-buyer dependency of 28,500 tonnes; the broader voluntary market for enhanced-weathering credits is nascent, and 2025 saw removal demand soften even as commitments rose. Operating across Berlin and Brazil adds currency, regulatory, and coordination overhead, and Brazilian land-use, permitting, and basalt-supply logistics carry their own execution risk. The field is also crowding fast — Lithos, Mati, Terradot, and others are all chasing enhanced-weathering offtakes from the same handful of premium buyers. InPlanet's tropical-reactivity edge is real, but it must convert that into cost-competitive, rigorously verified tonnes before better-funded rivals lock up the buyers.
