Lithos Carbon

Lithos anchored the pathway's credibility and is now delivering on it. Its enhanced rock weathering spreads finely crushed basalt across croplands, where rainwater and soil acids convert atmospheric CO2 into dissolved bicarbonate ultimately stored as ocean carbonate for tens of thousands of years — but the differentiator is its soil-based measurement, reporting, and verification, which empirically models how much carbon each field captures rather than relying on theoretical estimates. That MRV rigor is why Lithos won the pathway's defining deal: in December 2023, Frontier buyers including Alphabet and JPMorgan Chase signed a $57.1M offtake to remove ~154,000 tonnes of CO2 through 2028, then the largest enhanced-weathering purchase ever and a signal that the most sophisticated corporate buyers judged Lithos's measurement credible. Execution has followed: in December 2025 the company delivered 5,160 registry-certified tonnes, the largest enhanced-weathering issuance to date — proof it can move from contract to verified, credited removal, the step where most CDR ventures stumble. The basalt also releases nutrients that improve soil health and crop yields, so farmers participate at no cost, aligning the agronomic and climate incentives. Backed by ~$63M from top-tier investors including Greylock, Union Square Ventures, and Bain Capital Ventures, and co-founded by Yale/Georgia Tech geochemists Noah Planavsky and Chris Reinhard alongside CEO Mary Yap, Lithos pairs scientific authority with commercial traction — the combination the enhanced-weathering category needs to graduate from promise to product.
