Founded in 2022 and based in San Francisco, Lithos Carbon practices enhanced rock weathering: it spreads finely ground basalt across farmland, where the rock reacts with rainwater and soil acids to convert atmospheric CO2 into dissolved bicarbonate that is ultimately stored as ocean carbonates. The company pairs the application with soil-based measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) models to quantify removal while also improving crop yields. In December 2023, Frontier buyers including Alphabet and JPMorgan Chase signed a $57.1 million offtake to remove roughly 154,000 tonnes of CO2 through 2028, then the largest enhanced-weathering purchase to date.
