Mati Carbon did the thing the entire CDR field was competing to do: in April 2025 it won the $50M grand prize of the four-year, $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition — the largest CDR prize ever awarded — validating enhanced rock weathering on smallholder farms as a scalable, verifiable pathway against a global field of rivals. Its model is distinctive and hard to copy: as a U.S. 501(c)(3)-backed nonprofit, Mati spreads finely crushed basalt free of charge on the fields of smallholder farmers across India, Tanzania, and Zambia, delivering carbon removal while raising soil health, cutting input costs, and lifting incomes — farmers report average yield increases around 20% — for the populations most exposed to climate change. That structure aligns the climate outcome with genuine development impact, giving Mati access to blended and philanthropic finance ordinary carbon startups can't tap: J.P. Morgan committed blended finance to fund its expansion across the Global South after the prize. The nonprofit framing also insulates it somewhat from the voluntary market's price volatility, since impact-motivated and development-finance capital values the co-benefits directly. Founded in 2022 by Shantanu Agarwal and headquartered in Houston, with scientific roots in St. Louis, Mati has grown from pilots to thousands of participating farmers and aims to reach 100 million smallholders over two decades. It has proven that enhanced weathering can scale through smallholder agriculture — the pathway's largest addressable land base — while directing value to the world's most vulnerable growers.

The XPRIZE win is a validation and a windfall, but a $50M prize is not a recurring business model, and Mati's nonprofit structure — an asset for impact capital — constrains its access to the venture equity that funds rapid industrial scale-up, leaving it dependent on the availability and pace of blended and philanthropic finance that is inherently lumpier than growth equity. Enhanced weathering carries the same unresolved measurement problem regardless of who deploys it: quantifying durable removal from basalt spread across thousands of dispersed smallholder plots is harder, not easier, than on large consolidated farms, because MRV must sample and model enormous heterogeneity of soils, rainfall, and application across three countries. Operating across rural India, Tanzania, and Zambia is a formidable logistics and coordination challenge — sourcing and crushing basalt, distributing it to thousands of fragmented farms, and verifying outcomes in regions with limited infrastructure — that resists the standardization scale demands. The scale ambition is enormous (100 million farmers over 20 years) against present operations still numbering in the thousands, an extraordinary ramp. And the carbon credits Mati ultimately sells face the same soft, integrity-scrutinized voluntary market as every enhanced-weathering peer, with the same debate over crediting methodology. Mati's mission and momentum are genuine, but turning a prize-winning pilot into durable, verified, financed removal at planetary scale is a decade-long execution problem the $50M only begins to fund.
