Mission Zero is betting that the cheapest DAC is the one that skips heat entirely. Its modular, all-electric system contacts ambient air with a capture solution and uses an electrochemical cell to regenerate that solution and release pure CO2 at ambient conditions — no high-temperature calcination, which is the single largest energy cost in conventional DAC. Running on electricity rather than heat sharply cuts energy use and lets the skid-based units bolt onto existing industrial sites and scale incrementally rather than as monolithic megaprojects. That architecture has moved from concept to fielded hardware unusually fast: after raising a £21.8M Series A in March 2024 (led by 2150, with Breakthrough Energy Ventures, World Fund, and Siemens Financial Services), Mission Zero turned on the UK's first commercial DAC plant with the University of Sheffield in late 2023 to enable SAF-from-air, then in 2025 opened a Norfolk plant with O.C.O Technology — the world's first fully integrated DAC-to-building-materials demonstration, mineralizing captured CO2 into manufactured limestone — and began deployment alongside Deep Sky in Alberta, Canada. Three fielded systems in under two years, across two continents and multiple end-uses (fuels, building materials, sequestration), is a deployment cadence most DAC peers can't match. Backed by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy and designed for the modular, distributed scaling that could make atmospheric removal deployable at industrial sites worldwide, Mission Zero has a credible claim to a lower-energy, faster-to-deploy DAC path.
