Phlair

Phlair is a seed-stage company — roughly $18M raised on a EUR 14.5M round — attempting one of the most capital-intensive build-outs in climate, and the gap between a 260-tonne pilot and a 20,000-tonne commercial plant is where DAC ambitions routinely stall for years and hundreds of millions. Every scaling claim ("off-the-shelf parts," "low cost on intermittent power") remains a pilot-stage assertion until Dawn actually runs at cost, and DAC history is a graveyard of promised cost curves that never survived first-of-a-kind reality. The demand side is softer than it looks: Shopify, Stripe, and Klarna are pre-purchase commitments from a voluntary market whose buyers can walk, renegotiate, or stretch delivery if budgets tighten — these are not offtake contracts underwritten by regulation. The competitive field is crowded and better-funded, with Climeworks, 1PointFive/Carbon Engineering, and a dozen electrochemical peers (RepAir among them) all racing the same cost target, and the winner is likely decided by balance sheet as much as chemistry. Deep Sky Alpha is validation, but it is also a bake-off — running next to Airbus and GE Vernova means Phlair must prove it is cheaper, not merely present. On a seed balance sheet against that field, the risk is running out of capital before the cost curve bends.
