RepAir Carbon

RepAir attacks DAC's core problem — energy — from the most elegant angle in the field: a battery-like electrochemical cell that separates CO2 from ambient air at room temperature with an applied current, using no thermal regeneration and no chemical sorbents. The company claims roughly 70% less energy than the DAC industry average, and if even directionally true that is the difference between a technology that pencils on renewable electricity and one that never does — energy is the dominant operating cost in direct air capture, so a step-change there flows straight to the levelized cost per tonne. The strategic backing is a strong tell: the $10M Series A (December 2022) and a $15M extension drew Equinor Ventures and Shell Ventures alongside Extantia, Taranis, and Zero Carbon Capital — energy majors that understand subsurface storage, have the capital to fund deployment, and rarely back DAC startups without a real technical read. The modular cells stack into arrays and slot naturally into the storage infrastructure those strategics already control, and the heat-free, chemical-free design avoids the sorbent-degradation and thermal-management headaches that plague competing approaches. As an Israeli deep-tech team with a differentiated electrochemical path and oil-major distribution behind it, RepAir is a credible low-energy dark horse in the DAC cost race.

RepAir has raised only about $25M — a rounding error against the hundreds of millions DAC scale-up consumes — and remains at lab-to-early-pilot stage, where its headline "70% less energy" claim is a bench figure that has not been proven at commercial scale, across real ambient humidity and temperature swings, over the electrode lifetimes that determine actual cost. Electrochemical DAC is scientifically appealing and commercially unproven at scale: membranes foul, electrodes degrade, and cell-stack capex can swamp the energy savings, which is precisely why no electrochemical DAC player has yet demonstrated durable sub-$100/tonne economics. Strategic investment from Shell and Equinor is validating but double-edged — energy majors take small options on many technologies and just as readily let them lapse, and a modest check buys a seat, not a commitment to fund a plant. The competitive set is punishing: RepAir races Phlair (also electrochemical, also all-electric), Climeworks, 1PointFive, and Spiritus, several of them far better capitalized and already permitting megatonne sites. The demand it would sell into is the same voluntary carbon-removal market whose prices and durability standards are unsettled. On a $25M balance sheet, RepAir's elegant chemistry has to survive the brutal, expensive climb from cell to array to plant before its energy advantage means anything — and it may need to raise substantially just to reach the starting line.
