Spiritus
Spiritus is a Direct Air Capture company founded in 2022 and based in Los Alamos, United States. It has raised $41M in total funding, most recently a Series A in 2025.
Founded as a Los Alamos National Laboratory spinout, Spiritus develops a low-energy direct air capture approach built around a proprietary nanostructured sorbent and a passive air-contacting design it calls the Carbon Orchard, which lets ambient wind move air across the sorbent rather than relying on large fans. The company targets DAC and sequestration costs below $100 per ton. Spiritus raised an $11 million seed round backed by Khosla Ventures, followed by a $30 million Series A led by Aramco Ventures with Khosla Ventures, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, and TDK Ventures. Its first full-scale site, Orchard One near Casper, Wyoming, is permitted to remove over a million tons of CO2 annually.
Its passive, fan-light contactor design is one of the most credible bids to push DAC costs toward the $100-per-ton threshold needed for scale.
