Spiritus is asking investors to believe an 85% cost reduction from a company that has raised roughly $41M and not yet operated a full-scale plant — the exact profile of DAC promises that have repeatedly failed to survive first-of-a-kind reality. "Passive" air contacting is physically real but performance-constrained: wind is intermittent and site-specific, so capture rates swing with weather, and the sorbent must hold capacity and cycle life across Wyoming's dust, cold, and humidity extremes before any $100/tonne math holds. Orchard One is permitted for over a million tonnes a year, but a permit is not a plant — building, powering, and operating megatonne sequestration is a multi-hundred-million-dollar undertaking that $41M does not fund, implying enormous future raises against a voluntary-removal market whose prices are soft and whose buyers can defer. The Aramco lead is a double-edged validation: an oil-major option on carbon removal, welcome capital but no guarantee of the sustained project finance scale-up requires. The Prometheus data-hall tie-up is early-stage and speculative — carbon-negative datacenters remain more press release than operating asset. And the competitive field (Climeworks, 1PointFive, Phlair, RepAir, Heirloom) is racing the same cost target with more capital. If Orchard One's real-world cost lands anywhere near the industry's historical overruns rather than the promised sub-$100, Spiritus becomes another cautionary DAC cost curve.
