Sublime Systems is an Industrial Decarbonization company founded in 2020 and based in Somerville, United States. It has raised $200M in total funding, most recently a Strategic in 2024.
Spun out of MIT in 2020 by Leah Ellis and Yet-Ming Chiang, Somerville-based Sublime Systems produces cement through an electrochemical process that operates at ambient temperature, eliminating the high-heat limestone kiln responsible for most of conventional cement's CO2. The company has raised roughly $200M, including a combined $75M from building-materials majors CRH and Holcim, and won a U.S. DOE award toward a first commercial factory in Holyoke, Massachusetts. In 2025 Microsoft signed a binding long-term purchase for up to 622,500 metric tons of Sublime Cement, one of the largest clean-cement offtakes to date.
Its electrochemical route sidesteps both the fuel emissions and the process emissions of cement-making, the hardest part of the industry to abate.
