Svante has spent nearly two decades and roughly $318M to reach a gigafactory whose economics depend entirely on capture demand that has consistently underwhelmed — and the last disclosed equity round is the 2022 Series E, meaning Redwood is being ramped against demand that must now materialize on the strength of prior capital. A filter factory rated for 10 million tonnes a year is only an asset if projects buy the filters, and point-source carbon capture has a long history of cancelled and delayed deployments as the capex, energy penalty, and policy uncertainty repeatedly fail to pencil for heavy industry. The customer base — cement, steel, and hydrogen operators — is cyclical, cost-obsessed, and slow to commit to bolt-on capture without either a carbon price or a subsidy underwriting it, and MOF-based sorbents must prove durability, poisoning resistance, and cost-per-tonne against amine systems that, for all their flaws, are the field-proven incumbent. Strategic investors like Chevron and GE Vernova are validation but also a concentration risk: their appetite tracks oil prices, policy, and their own capture strategies, any of which can cool. The mass-production thesis cuts both ways — if capture demand stays thin, a gigafactory is a large fixed cost hunting for orders. Nineteen years in, Svante's manufacturing bet still hinges on a capture market that keeps promising to arrive at scale and keeps slipping.
