Enhanced rock weathering's Achilles' heel is measurement, and it is a serious one: the CO2 drawdown happens diffusely across soils and watersheds over years, making it genuinely hard to verify how much carbon a given tonne of spread rock actually removed — and buyers, registries, and critics know it, which keeps MRV standards unsettled and credit quality contested. That uncertainty caps pricing and pace; a removal you can't cleanly prove is a removal the market discounts. UNDO is also lightly capitalized for the ambition — roughly $23M raised, with the last disclosed round in 2023 — against a business that requires mining, crushing, hauling, and spreading rock at industrial volume, a logistics-and-energy-heavy operation whose own footprint and cost must be netted against the removal. The XPRIZE result underscores the competitive reality: UNDO was a runner-up, while Mati Carbon took the $50M grand prize in the same enhanced-weathering category, and Vaulted Deep, Lithos, and others crowd the field. Demand is real but concentrated — heavy reliance on Microsoft means one buyer's procurement strategy shapes the trajectory — and the voluntary market underneath remains volatile. If ERW's MRV doesn't harden into buyer-trusted permanence at defensible cost, UNDO stays a promising, thinly-funded supplier in a pathway the market still isn't sure how to price.
