Varaha converts crop and invasive-plant biomass into biochar at industrial pyrolysis and gasification sites, locking biogenic carbon away for centuries. Its Gujarat project processes the invasive Prosopis juliflora and supplies Google, while its Maharashtra project turns cotton stalks that farmers would otherwise burn into biochar for Microsoft. The Microsoft program calls for 18 reactors operating for 15 years, with more than 2 million tonnes of projected lifetime removal.
Varaha enrolls smallholder farmers in regenerative practices, supported by machinery such as direct seeders and happy seeders, and generates carbon credits from the results. Its Kheti project in Haryana and Punjab covers more than 200,000 hectares, uses Verra's VM0042 methodology and shares revenue with farmers. Mirova invested $30.5 million in the program in November 2025.
Varaha's in-house measurement, reporting and verification platform uses remote sensing, machine learning and field science to quantify carbon removed or avoided across its projects. The company built its digital MRV systems to meet buyer requirements such as Microsoft's.
