Steve Krouse co-founded Val Town and serves as CEO. He previously was a principal engineer at Mapbox and a product lead at Observable, the data-visualization notebook company. Inspired by Seymour Papert's ideas about computing for everyone, he envisioned a platform where, as he put it, GitHub Gists could run and AWS Lambda were fun. He started Val Town to let anyone write, run, and share small pieces of server-side code directly in the browser.
Tom MacWright co-founded Val Town and serves as CTO. From 2009 to 2017 he helped build Mapbox, contributing to widely used open-source mapping projects such as Mapbox GL, Leaflet, Mapnik, and OpenStreetMap. He then became the first employee at Observable from 2017 to 2019, where he worked across the product from productionizing the website to design. He brought that deep background in developer tools and data visualization to co-founding Val Town's browser-based coding platform.

A browser-based platform for writing and running serverless TypeScript and JavaScript functions called vals. Users write code in an online editor and instantly turn it into an HTTP API, scheduled cron job, or email handler, with built-in storage and the ability to fork, share, and version vals like social code snippets. Vals run on managed Deno infrastructure, so there is no server provisioning, build step, or deployment pipeline to manage, making it well suited to automations, internal tools, and quick prototypes.
Townie is Val Town's AI assistant for building and editing vals from natural-language prompts. The v5 release is powered by Anthropic's Claude models and is billed on pay-per-use credits, letting users describe an app, API, or automation and have Townie write, run, and iterate on the code directly inside the Val Town environment.
