The strategic position is the enviable part. Next.js is the dominant React framework, giving Vercel a top-of-funnel no competitor can buy, and the AI wave turned that distribution into a second act: AI agents now create roughly 30% of apps on the platform, v0 turns prompts into deployed production apps, and the open-source AI SDK has become the default TypeScript toolkit for building with 100+ models — meaning Vercel owns the on-ramp whether humans or agents write the code. Customers include Anthropic, OpenAI, and Square; the buyer is increasingly a platform team with a six-figure contract rather than a hobbyist with a side project. Guillermo Rauch is openly signaling IPO readiness, and the framing writes itself: as software creation explodes in volume because AI removed the authoring bottleneck, every marginal app needs hosting, preview, and edge delivery — and the company that made deployment invisible collects a toll on the entire expansion.

Vercel's moat is a popular open-source framework it gives away, and the strategy's central tension is that monetizing Next.js hosting invites the ecosystem to route around it: OpenNext, Cloudflare's and Netlify's adapters, and self-hosting improvements Vercel itself was pressured into shipping all commoditize the deploy layer, while developer grievances about framework complexity and platform lock-in are now a recurring genre. The margin structure underneath is resold hyperscaler compute and bandwidth, which caps gross margins well below pure software and leaves Vercel competing on price against the very clouds it builds on — a squeeze Cloudflare, with its own network, escapes. The 30%-of-apps-from-agents statistic cuts both ways: agent-generated apps are overwhelmingly low-value, churn-prone free-tier workloads, and agents choosing infrastructure by API convenience have no brand loyalty. If AI collapses the framework layer's importance, Vercel's funnel narrows precisely as its valuation demands it widen.
