Microsoft Designer

Microsoft Designer is free with any Microsoft account, which is precisely the point: the product is a distribution play for the Microsoft 365 subscription machine rather than a standalone revenue line. Designer generates branded social graphics, invitations, and marketing visuals with DALL-E 3 under the hood, and embeds directly into PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, OneNote, and Teams — so its monetization is the per-seat M365 license organizations already pay, with Designer raising the suite's stickiness and giving Microsoft a Canva answer at a marginal price of zero. Who pays is therefore the M365 base of businesses and consumers reaching hundreds of millions of users, on recurring subscription terms; the creative tool itself is a retention and attach feature inside that bundle. The economics only make sense at Microsoft's scale: image-generation costs are absorbed as acquisition and retention spend for a suite whose pricing power grows with each workflow it absorbs. For independent creative-tools vendors the competitive meaning is blunt — the casual design segment is being bundled into software buyers already own, leaving standalone players to defend the professional and brand-controlled tiers a free bundled tool does not serve.
