Alejandro Matamala
Co-founded Runway in 2018 and has served as Chief Design Officer since its inception. Studied communication at university and opened a design studio in Chile before cofounding Vitrin and Deenty. Prior to founding Runway, was a research resident at NYU studying the interaction between artificial intelligence and creativity. Also co-founded Material, a graphic design studio, and Ediciones DAGA, an art book publishing house highlighting visual artists from South America. Distinguishing trait: Approaches building AI tools from a design-first perspective focused on creating intuitive, artist-friendly experiences rather than prioritizing algorithmic capability alone—a philosophy that shapes how Runway translates research into tools for creators.
