Founded in 2005 in Toronto as AgileBits by Dave Teare, Roustem Karimov, and co-founders, 1Password began as a consumer and business password manager and bootstrapped for over a decade before taking institutional capital. Under CEO Jeff Shiner it has moved beyond passwords into Extended Access Management, securing access to company resources by managing identities, devices, and applications, including unsanctioned and shadow-IT apps that traditional IAM tools miss. The company raised a $620M Series C in January 2022 at a roughly $6.8B valuation and reported reaching around $400M in annual recurring revenue by late 2025.
1Password is one of the largest independent identity-security vendors and is betting that securing the device-and-app access layer, not just credentials, is the next frontier for the workforce.
