Island invented the enterprise-browser category and, by March 2025, had convinced the market it might be a platform rather than a feature: the $250M Series E led by Coatue lifted its valuation to roughly $4.85B, up from $2.9B just eleven months earlier, on ARR that management said had more than doubled every year since emerging from stealth in 2022 (external estimates put it near $87M in 2024 across roughly 450 enterprise customers including Fortune 100 firms and global banks). The thesis is elegant: work now happens inside the browser, so the browser is the natural control point for security, governance, and data-loss prevention — and building those controls into a Chromium base rather than bolting on extensions or shipping VPNs and virtual desktops lets IT extend secure access to contractors, BYOD, and unmanaged devices at a fraction of the infrastructure cost. Each capability Island folds in — copy/paste and download restrictions, screenshot and watermark controls, conditional access, SaaS DLP — displaces a separate legacy tool, which is why the pitch is framed as replacing SASE stacks, not supplementing them. Founder-CEO Mike Fey (ex-Symantec, ex-McAfee president) sells to the enterprise buyer fluently, and the $730M raised gives Island the balance sheet to keep expanding the platform while the category it created goes mainstream.

Island's category is now the most contested land grab in security, and the challengers have vastly deeper pockets. Palo Alto Networks bought Talon for roughly $625M in late 2023 and ships Prisma Access Browser into an installed base Island cannot reach; Microsoft can weaponize Edge across every enterprise it already licenses; and most dangerously, Google announced at Cloud Next 2026 that Chrome Enterprise Premium — at $6 per user per month — adds real-time DLP, data masking, and AI governance directly into the browser three billion people already use. When the incumbent browser vendor bundles the core feature for the price of a coffee, a $4.85B startup selling a separate browser faces an existential adverse-selection problem: why deploy and train users on Island when the security controls arrive natively in Chrome? External ARR estimates suggest growth already moderated to the mid-teens in 2024, a troubling deceleration for a company priced at more than 50x revenue. Adoption friction is real — replacing the browser is among the most intrusive changes IT can ask of users — and Island's ~450-customer base is thin for the valuation. The enterprise-browser thesis may prove correct and still leave Island the loser, having educated the market that Google and Microsoft then monetize for free.
