Tailscale turned WireGuard into a product developers genuinely love — a mesh VPN where traffic flows directly peer-to-peer while a coordination plane handles keys and access policy — and that affection is converting into a real enterprise business at improbable speed. The company doubled its customer base in ten months to more than 10,000 paying businesses, and its customer roster reads like a map of the AI boom: Perplexity, Mistral, Groq, Hugging Face, and Cohere run on it, alongside Instacart, SAP, Duolingo, and Motorola. That AI-lab concentration is the sharpest tailwind in networking: distributed GPU fleets, multi-cloud training clusters, and remote inference endpoints all need exactly the flat, secure, any-to-any connectivity mesh Tailscale provides, and legacy hub-and-spoke VPNs cannot deliver it. The $160M Series C (April 2025, Accel-led) at a $1.5B valuation — double its 2022 mark — capitalized a company management says is growing ARR more than 100% year-over-year, the kind of growth rate that justifies aggressive investment ahead of an eventual IPO. Bottom-up developer adoption is the most durable go-to-market in infrastructure software: engineers install it themselves, then it spreads to teams, then finance signs an enterprise contract. Tailscale owns that motion in zero-trust networking.

Tailscale's beloved product sits in a market the giants intend to commoditize: Cloudflare, Zscaler, Palo Alto (Prisma Access), and Cisco all offer ZTNA/SASE, and Cloudflare in particular gives away generous free tiers of tunneling and access to pull developers into a broader platform, attacking Tailscale's exact bottom-up motion with a much larger free surface and a global edge network Tailscale cannot match. WireGuard is open source and Tailscale's own control plane has open-source analogs (Headscale), so the technical moat is thinner than the brand affection suggests — a determined enterprise or competitor can replicate much of the stack. Reported revenue remains modest (roughly $45M by one third-party estimate) against a $1.5B valuation, implying a ~30x-plus multiple that demands the triple-digit growth persist for years without stumble. The AI-lab customer concentration that flatters today's growth is also a risk: those startups are the most volatile buyers in tech, and a funding-winter reset among them would hit Tailscale's cohort hardest. And as it climbs into the enterprise, Tailscale collides with SASE incumbents whose compliance certifications, DLP, and CASB features enterprise security teams demand — capabilities a mesh-VPN company must build or bolt on before it can displace the platforms it competes against.
