Atlan was founded in 2018 by Prukalpa Sankar and Varun Banka, who spun it out of SocialCops, the data-for-good company they had built for clients like the United Nations and the Government of India, and launched it publicly in 2020. The platform unifies data cataloging, discovery, column-level lineage, and governance on an enterprise data graph fed by 80-plus native connectors, and its Context Agents use AI to auto-generate documentation and business context for data assets. Named a leader in the Forrester Wave for Enterprise Data Catalogs for DataOps, Atlan grew revenue 7x in two years and raised a $105M Series C at a $750M valuation in May 2024, co-led by GIC and Meritech Capital, for customers including Cisco, Autodesk, Unilever, Nasdaq, Plaid, and HubSpot. In 2024 the company rebuilt its platform around the Context Lakehouse, an Iceberg-native context store designed to feed governed metadata to AI systems like Snowflake Cortex, Databricks Genie, and Claude.
