Spencer Kimball
B.A. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley (1996), where he co-created GIMP as a class project in 1995. At Google for a decade, he helped architect Colossus (successor to the Google File System) and worked on the Google Servlet Engine. He co-founded Viewfinder, a photo-sharing app (acquired by Square in 2013), then launched CockroachDB on GitHub in 2014 — inspired by Google's internal Spanner distributed SQL database. He co-founded Cockroach Labs the following year and serves as CEO, continuing to contribute directly to CockroachDB's source code.
