Holds an MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler and a B.S. in Finance and Information Technology from the University of Maryland. He spent years as a data practitioner at Deloitte Consulting, Argyle Social (COO), and RJMetrics (VP of Marketing) before founding Fishtown Analytics in 2016 — a data consulting shop that evolved into dbt Labs. He coined the term 'analytics engineering' and his newsletter and podcast have shaped the practice for thousands of data professionals. dbt Labs reached a $4B valuation before merging with Fivetran in June 2026.

Studied at Drexel University and worked as a Software Engineer at 8tracks before joining RJMetrics, where he worked under Tristan Handy. He co-founded Fishtown Analytics alongside Handy and Connor McArthur in 2016, building dbt (data build tool) as a side project that became the de facto standard for data transformation. He served as Chief Product Officer at dbt Labs until February 2022. His engineering work on dbt's core transformation framework helped establish the modern analytics engineering discipline.

Holds a B.E. in Computer Engineering from Villanova University. He built his early career as a software engineer and engineering manager at RJMetrics and then at Stitch, accumulating over a decade developing enterprise-ready data transformation tools. He co-founded Fishtown Analytics with Tristan Handy and Drew Banin in 2016, which became dbt Labs. As CTO he has led the technical strategy and infrastructure of the dbt platform, overseeing its evolution from an open-source command-line tool to a cloud-based analytics engineering platform.
