VAST Data was founded in 2016 by XtremIO, Kaminario, and CTERA veterans and spent three years in stealth building DASE (Disaggregated Shared-Everything), a distributed architecture that eliminates storage tiering by putting all data on flash. After launching in 2019 as Universal Storage, the company expanded into the VAST Data Platform — unified DataStore, DataBase, DataEngine, and DataSpace services — and in May 2025 repositioned the stack as the VAST AI Operating System for agentic AI workloads. VAST is deeply embedded in the NVIDIA ecosystem: NVIDIA has been an investor since the 2021 Series D, and the VAST InsightEngine runs NVIDIA inference microservices for real-time RAG. Its platform underpins AI factories and GPU clouds including CoreWeave and Crusoe, plus customers like Cursor, Mistral AI, JPMorgan Chase, Lowe's, and the U.S. Air Force. The company reached $2 billion in cumulative bookings faster than any data company in history (announced May 2025), has surpassed $4 billion in cumulative bookings with more than $500 million in committed ARR and positive operating margin and free cash flow, and in April 2026 closed an approximately $1 billion Series F (primary and secondary) at a $30 billion valuation led by Drive Capital with Access Industries co-leading and Fidelity, NEA, and NVIDIA participating.
VAST Data has become the default data layer of the AI buildout — the storage-database-compute substrate under NVIDIA-aligned GPU clouds like CoreWeave — and its leap from a $9.1B to a $30B valuation in one round makes it one of the most valuable private infrastructure companies in the world, displacing legacy storage incumbents as AI factories scale to millions of GPUs.
