Archer Aviation follows a hardware-manufacturing model: customers purchase aircraft in unit transactions, with revenue recognized upon delivery. The company designs and builds electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft — specifically the Midnight model — for two distinct end markets: commercial urban air mobility operators and the U.S. Department of Defense. On the commercial side, prospective buyers include airlines and logistics operators that would acquire fleets of aircraft for passenger or cargo routes. On the defense side, Archer holds an Air Force contract for eVTOL evaluation, with potential follow-on procurement for special operations, medevac, and austere-logistics missions. Because the company is pre-revenue, the model is still unproven at scale, but the structural economics of aircraft manufacturing are well understood: unit revenue is high (millions per aircraft), gross margins depend on production volume and supply-chain maturity, and the capital-intensity of manufacturing and certification is the dominant cost.
