Revenue is recognized over time using percentage-of-completion or contract milestones, which smooths quarterly swings but ties cash flow tightly to government appropriations cycles. The economics are structurally different from commercial businesses. Gross margins sit inside contract terms — cost-plus contracts guarantee a fixed fee on allowable costs (typically 6–10%), while fixed-price contracts carry performance risk but allow upside if costs come in under estimate. Margins scale only if the company improves manufacturing efficiency across production runs, which is why the B-21 low-rate initial production is a critical margin inflection point. The company invests its own capital in IRAD (independent research and development) to seed future programs, effectively subsidizing bid-and-proposal work in hopes of winning the next decade-long franchise. Profitability is driven by contract mix, production learning curves, and the ability to retain follow-on sustainment and modernization work after the initial hardware delivery.
