A child chess prodigy who reached master level at 13, Hassabis was coding AI for Populous II at Bullfrog Productions before he turned 16 and became lead developer of *Theme Park* at 17. After earning a Double First in Computer Science from Cambridge, he founded Elixir Studios, an award-winning but ultimately short-lived games company. He then pivoted to academia, completing a PhD in cognitive neuroscience at UCL and postdocs at MIT and Harvard — work that directly shaped his thesis that understanding the brain was the best path to building general intelligence. In 2010, he co-founded DeepMind, which Google acquired in 2014. The neuroscience-meets-AI thread runs through everything: his games featured learning AI, his PhD studied memory and imagination in the brain, and DeepMind's research agenda has long drawn on cognitive science. He was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold.

Dropped out of Oxford University at 19 to co-found the Muslim Youth Helpline, a telephone counselling service. In 2010, co-founded DeepMind alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg, later serving as Head of Applied AI and Chief Product Officer through Google's 2014 acquisition. After a decade at DeepMind, co-founded Inflection AI (creator of the Pi chatbot) and served as a venture partner at Greylock before becoming CEO of Microsoft AI in 2024. Authored *The Coming Wave*, a book on AI's societal risks. Distinguished by an unusual blend of AI product leadership and vocal advocacy for regulation — he helped establish DeepMind's ethics board and consistently pushes for binding safety standards rather than voluntary industry commitments.

A New Zealander by origin, holds an MSc from the University of Waikato and a PhD from the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA) in Switzerland, where he was supervised by Marcus Hutter. His doctoral thesis, *Machine Super Intelligence* (2008), and the co-authored paper "Universal Intelligence" proposed a formal, algorithmic definition of machine intelligence — work that directly anticipated DeepMind's founding mission. Prior to co-founding DeepMind in 2010, he held a post-doctoral position in finance at the University of Lugano and earlier software engineering roles. Among DeepMind's three co-founders, he is the least publicly visible: he gives comparatively few interviews and has long framed AGI not as a specific threshold but as a field of study, consistently predicting a 50% likelihood of AGI by 2028.
