Footprint's bet is elegant and attacks a burden every regulated business shares: consumers should complete KYC once and carry a portable, encrypted identity everywhere, rather than re-onboarding — and re-exposing their PII — at every company. The platform unifies three things usually bought separately: identity verification (document plus selfie), a secure PII vault, and authentication, with passkeys bound to verified identities to prevent account takeover. The vault is a sharp wedge: by encrypting and tokenizing sensitive data on Footprint's side (using AWS Nitro Enclaves and FIDO2 passkeys), it lets customers offload the liability of holding raw PII, turning a compliance headache into a reason to adopt. The de-duplicated identity network is the long-game moat — Footprint Connections lets its customers recognize consumers already verified elsewhere on the network, moving the industry from "default-bad" (everyone endures full KYC) to "default-good" (known good actors sail through), which compounds in value with every company that joins. The founding team is credible: CEO Eli Wachs and CTO Alex Grinman, the latter a co-founder of Krypt.co (acquired by Akamai), bring security and cryptography depth. The May 2024 $13M Series A led by QED Investors, with Index Ventures, Lerer Hippeau, and BoxGroup, funds expansion into a fraud suite and more verification data types (credit-bureau, pay-stub, vehicle data).
