The company has already weathered a serious reputational episode: earlier scrutiny over its use of one-to-many facial recognition and over CEO statements about its technology forced the IRS to walk back an exclusive ID.me requirement and add a non-biometric alternative (Login.gov), a precedent showing that its government moat can be legislated or competed away.
