Fluence runs a hardware-plus-recurring-services model: customers purchase utility-scale battery energy storage systems and then pay ongoing fees for the software and optimization platform that manages them. The company sells physical battery storage equipment, inverters, and balance-of-plant hardware to grid operators, utilities, and independent power producers, with revenue recognized on delivery and acceptance of each project. On top of that, Fluence's Fluence IQ and Mosaic software platforms provide AI-driven trading, dispatch optimization, and grid services management, generating recurring SaaS-style revenue through multi-year platform agreements tied to the assets in operation. The hardware side is project-based and capital-intensive, with margin concentrated in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution and supply-chain management. The software layer scales more efficiently — once a storage asset is deployed, the marginal cost of adding optimization logic is low, and each megawatt-hour traded through the platform generates economic value that Fluence captures via platform fees or performance-sharing structures. The model structurally earns thin hardware margins subsidized (in an economic sense) by higher-margin, recurring software and services revenue that builds over the life of each installation.
