Ben Brown spent nearly twelve years at Google (2012–2024), where he was one of the founders of the Google Wifi program, helped lead Google Home and the company's smart home platform investments, and ultimately ran Nest's energy and connectivity business — the group behind the Nest Renew service that became half of Renew Home. Earlier in his career he built climate and energy tools used by the UN, DOE, and EPA, founded and sold a smart home energy management company, and started out in the mid-2000s designing demand response programs that ran on pagers and telephones. Brown was named CEO of Renew Home when Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners merged Google Nest Renew with OhmConnect in December 2023, and led the combined company through its May 2024 public launch as the largest residential virtual power plant in the US, targeting 50 GW of managed load by 2030.

Consumer load-shifting service descended from Nest Renew that automatically schedules thermostat-driven energy use toward cheaper, cleaner hours. In summer 2025 Renew Home ran 25 million Energy Shifts across 4.1 million households in 27 US states, representing nearly 4 GW of flexible capacity nationwide — including an estimated 380 MW peak reduction from roughly 640,000 devices in PJM on July 29, 2025.
Demand-response program inherited from Google Nest that pays households for allowing brief automatic thermostat adjustments during grid peak events. Participants received more than $40 million in rewards in 2024, and Renew Home is extending the program across its network of more than 100 energy providers.
