5Y Capital was founded in 2008 by Ken Shi and Richard Liu as Morningside Venture Capital, spinning out of the Chan family's Morningside Group, and rebranded in October 2020 after the name of Shanghai's Wuyuan Road where it is headquartered. The firm invests from seed through growth in dual-currency USD and RMB funds, backed by global sovereign wealth funds, endowments and family offices. It was the first institutional investor in Xiaomi and a multi-stage backer of Kuaishou, XPeng and Pony.ai.
