Cleara Biotech is a spinout of University Medical Center Utrecht built on the FOXO4-DRI senescent-cell research of scientific founder Peter de Keizer. The company develops D-amino-acid peptide senolytics that disrupt the FOXO4-p53 interaction to trigger apoptosis in senescent ('scarred') cells, paired with associated biomarkers. Its optimized lead candidates include CL04183 and CL04177, aimed at late-stage cancers and chronic age-related diseases, and remain preclinical. Cleara closed a $2.5M seed round in September 2022 led by Apollo Health Ventures, with participation from Curie Capital, ROM Utrecht Region and Longevity Tech Fund.
Commercializes the FOXO4-DRI peptide, one of the most-cited proofs-of-concept that senescent cells can be selectively destroyed.
