Founding and Early Vision (2015–2020)
Desktop Metal was founded in 2015 by Ric Fulop, Jonah Myerberg, and Yet-Ming Chiang (alongside MIT researchers) to democratize metal 3D printing. The company developed proprietary technologies including Bound Metal Deposition (BMD) for the Studio System and binder jetting for the Production System. By 2020, having raised $438 million from investors including BMW iVentures, GV, and Kleiner Perkins, Desktop Metal announced its intention to go public via merger with SPAC Trine Acquisition Corp.
IPO and Market Peak (December 2020–February 2021)
Desktop Metal completed its SPAC merger on December 9, 2020, valuing the company at $2.5 billion and listing on the NYSE under ticker DM. The stock surged in early 2021, reaching a peak of approximately $34.94 per share in February 2021, implying a market capitalization near $5 billion. Investor enthusiasm for industrial automation and 'Industry 4.0' technologies drove valuations to levels the company would struggle to justify operationally.
